Dental implants are designed to function just like natural teeth, with all the strength and durability to eat your favorite foods again. However, some patients may assume that they can eat their favorite foods again immediately after surgery, but that’s not quite the case. Instead, take some time to allow your surgical site to heal, and treat it tenderly by consuming foods that are softer. Take a look at our list below.
Why Can’t I Eat Solid Foods Right Away?
The reason why is simple: you and your dental implant are in the healing process, but also undergoing osseointegration. This is when the implant is fusing with your jawbone to become a permanent fixture, and any serious disturbance at the surgical site could potentially dislodge that. That’s why we recommend the following foods to consume until your implant site is all healed.
Oatmeal is a great alternative breakfast choice from toast, waffles, and other options that require some crunching. Just be aware of any additives to your oatmeal, such as fruit or granola, as munching on these could be painful with your implant.
Yogurt And Other Soft Dairy
Dairy products are another safe choice in food during your recovery. Not only are they full of calcium but they are generally soft in their consistency. For example, yogurt can be a creamy and fruity option as a snack. Meanwhile, soft mac ‘n cheese would be easy on your dental implant site as well.
If you are feeling too sore for solid meats, than soups or risottos are your best bet at some hearty protein. Make sure that all the ingredients of your soup or stew are soft to eat. Any hard vegetables or tough pieces of meat could be difficult to chew for your dental implant. Risottos are also easy on the teeth, close to oatmeal in consistency.
Potatoes are a wonderful thing, due to their incredible versatility. You can boil them, bake them, mash them, fry them, and more. As such, anytime this spud is cooked, it becomes soft enough to eat with little chewing. You can also season your potatoes with various toppings, like butter, cheese, sour cream, chives, and more. Just be aware of any small pieces getting lodged between your teeth, especially between your implant site while it’s still healing.
Like potatoes, eggs are also very soft when they’re cooked. Whether scrambled, sunny side up, poached, or boiled, eggs are pretty friendly for your implant site. Eggs can also be used in nearly every meal – they aren’t just for breakfast anymore!
