Dental Crowns
Los Altos, CA

When you hear the word crown, you might instantly think about something that royalty might wear on their heads. While this is most certainly one type of crown, there is another type that is used in dentistry. At Peninsula Center of Cosmetic Dentistry, we use dental crowns to restore and protect teeth affected by many different types of physical damage. In doing so, this restoration helps you to keep your natural tooth, preventing all of the issues that typically come with tooth loss. If you have suffered tooth damage, we can assess its severity and determine your need for a crown.

Do I Need to Get a Crown?

Any dental trauma should be examined. Even if you cannot see anything when you look in the mirror, or you are not in pain, this does not mean that there is not an issue present. While some trauma may result in no significant damage, it is also possible for a tooth to crack or break. In such instances, a crown is generally recommended. Without a crown, teeth affected by these types of injuries are at risk for severe harm. Damaged teeth are not as strong as healthy ones. They can break further, resulting in the need for an extraction. Cracked and broken teeth can also develop infections, which compromise not just your oral health, but your general health as well.

What Type of Crown Do I Need?

There are a few different types of crowns. The type recommended to you will depend upon a few different things, including the location of the tooth and your personal preference. Crowns made of metal offer the greatest strength and are often recommended for teeth at the back of the mouth. Ceramic crowns are generally the most popular choice. Though not as strong as metal, they are the most natural in appearance. This makes them perfect for treating front teeth. Not only do they restore and protect your oral health, but ceramic crowns also aid in improving the appearance of your smile.

Does Getting a Crown Hurt?

Getting a crown is not a painful process. While we do need to remove enamel from the damaged tooth to properly place your crown, this is done after providing you with a local anesthetic. This prevents you from feeling any discomfort during the process.

Do Crowns Have Other Uses?

Crowns are commonly used to treat cracked or broken teeth, but this is not their only use. Crowns can treat teeth affected by decay when a regular filling is not enough. A crown can protect a tooth following a root canal. They can also be used as a way to anchor a bridge into place. Crowns can also be used for cosmetic reasons. Along with improving the appearance of cracked or broken teeth, they can also be used to improve the look of teeth that are small or misshapen.

If you have suffered damage to your teeth, a crown may be just the treatment you need to protect the affected tooth as well as your oral health. For more information, and to schedule your appointment, call Peninsula Center of Cosmetic Dentistry at (650) 948-5524 today.
