Today, we’ll be covering some of the most common questions regarding veneers, from the process to advantages and disadvantages. If you or a loved one are considering getting veneers and have any questions not answered below or wish to schedule an appointment, please call us at (650) 948-5524.

What Is A Veneer?

Veneers are thin shells of tooth-colored material (somewhat similar to artificial teeth) that are bonded onto the crowns, custom-modeled off of your teeth for superior looks, size, shape, and durability.

What Are Veneers Made From?

Veneers are most often made using either a porcelain resin or a tooth-colored plastic substance (also common in fillings. Construction normally takes place in our lab, where we craft every model according to measurements of your unique teeth. How long this process takes varies from patient to patient.

Why Should We Get Veneers?

The reason veneers have grown so popular is because they’re generally an efficient solution for those who deal with tooth discoloration, worn teeth, chips, cracks, misaligned teeth, deformities or gaps between their front teeth.

What Types Of Veneers Are There?

There are two common categories of veneers: Porcelain and composite. Which type you get is ultimately your decision, though should grant approval first. Porcelain is the more popular option, mainly due to superior endurance, durability and stain resistance compared to other materials. Porcelain might also be the right fit for you, depending on how badly your teeth are currently functioning and/or what personal oral habits you practice (Ex- Bruxism, or grinding & clenching teeth).

How Do I Get Veneers?

This process is typically carried out in three steps:
•  Step 1- After scheduling a consultation with one of our doctors, we will review your dental history and answer any questions or concerns you may also have X-rays or molds of your teeth taken for study.
•  Step 2- Preparation. A tiny amount of your tooth’s structure is removed. Then, an impression is taken. Temporary veneers are provided to you until being removed on the day of the procedure. In cases of patients choosing veneers made from colored filling material, this will be a one-appointment treatment.
•  Step 3- Your final veneers are bonded onto the crowns.

What Are The Benefits Of Getting Veneers?

•  Preparation for veneers requires very little tooth structure to be removed, allowing most of the tooth to be preserved.
•  Immediately noticeable improvement to your smile.
•  Again, veneers are more durable than natural teeth and provide greater resistance against stains.
•  You can choose your own color, to ensure that you get the exact smile you’re longing for.
•  Your periodontal (gum) tissue will having no difficulties or irritation in response to the veneers.

What Are The Drawbacks?

•  Once preparation is complete, the process can’t be reversed.
•  If the veneers chip or break, it can be challenging and time-consuming to fix without replacing them altogether (especially in cases of multiple veneers).
•  Veneers are not recommended for people with poor periodontal health.
•  Harmful dental habits (grinding or clenching teeth, nail-biting, etc) increase risk of veneer damage.
•  Although veneers are artificial, they’re still susceptible to decay. You must treat them as you would your natural teeth and practice good dental hygiene (flossing, brushing, regular dental appointments).
