Are there any limitations to teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening can be an effective solution for many patients with tooth discoloration. However, there are some limitations. Whitening may not be effective on brown stains. It is also not always effective for gray stains. It cannot treat stains caused by medication use or dental trauma.

If you have veneers, dental bonding, or crowns, whitening cannot treat these dental restorations. If you want to improve the color of your teeth, you may have to have your restorations changed so that they can match the new color of your teeth.

Is teeth whitening good for sensitive teeth?

White teeth are the hallmark of a confident, healthy smile. But if you suffer with the pain that comes from sensitive teeth and worry about teeth whitening procedures, there is still hope for achieving your ideal smile with little to no pain both during and after.

In-office PCCD treatments like Zoom! Teeth Whitening and whitening trays can help you achieve a smile up to eight shades whiter, sometimes in as little as an hour. If you do feel pain during whitening, it is most often due to the dehydration of your teeth that occurs during the process. Prepare your teeth and your mouth by using a fluoride rich sensitivity toothpaste or mouthwash consistently several weeks prior to your whitening appointment. You can also take OTC pain relievers if needed before and after your professional teeth whitening appointment.

How long does professional teeth whitening last?

Professional teeth whitening treatments at PCCD use higher concentrations of whitening or bleaching ingredients than you would find in OTC teeth whitening strips or kits. These higher concentrations make for drastic changes in a much smaller time frame. Where most OTC whitening strips call for up to 14 days of wear, professional whitening can be achieved in as little as one in-office appointment depending on the degree of discoloration.

As for the duration of teeth whitening after treatment, it does in large part depend on how well you care for your teeth afterwards. Professional teeth whitening, like Zoom!, can last between 12 and 24 months. If you can avoid drinks that stain teeth, like coffee, tea, and red wine, then your results will definitely be prolonged. If you do occasionally consume drinks or food that tend to stain teeth, be sure to drink through a straw and brush and floss your teeth soon afterwards.
